While tumbling can be traced to
archaeological drawings in ancient China, Egypt and Persia,
cheerleading began about 120 years ago at a Princeton University
football game. Thomas Peebler gathered 6 men who led a yell on
the sidelines in front of the students. The first pep club was
established at Princeton University in 1870, and first organized
cheerleading was initiated 1890 at the University of Minnesota,
as well as the first school cheerleading song. The first
cheerleader fraternity, Gamma Sigma, was organized in 1900.
Women became active in cheerleading in the 1920. The University
of Minnesota cheerleaders began to incorporate gymnastics,
cheerleading stunts and tumbling. In 1930 universities and high
schools began performing pompon routines. During the Second
World War, when men went to war, cheerleading became more a
female sport, but gymnastics were always done by men, while the
girls danced. The first cheerleading organization, National
Cheerleading Association (NCA), was founded in 1948. In 1950
college cheerleaders began
conducting cheerleading stunts and tumbling workshops to teach
fundamental cheerleading skills. Cheerleaders began supporting
all school sports the 1970's, sometimes selecting several
different squads to cheer for wrestling, track and swimming, and
high school and college cheerleading stunts and tumbling
competitions began. In 1980, universal standards and safety
guidelines were set and many dangerous tumbling moves and
pyramids were forbidden by the law. National cheerleading
tumbling competitions for junior and senior high school as well
as collegiate squads took place across America. The I.C.F.
Training Course for faculty cheerleading coaches was offered
across the United States.
Today, college cheerleading stunts and tumbling popularity is
fast growing. Cheerleading is now international, with Japan,
Europe, Australia, Canada, and Mexico promoting the sport.
Cheerleading tumbling enjoys a reputation of being an important
leadership force on practically every high school and college
campus in America, and a person must be highly skilled and
competitive in order to achieve the honored and respected
position of cheerleader.
